Two leading conservative voices, Mike Huckabee and Ben Carson, offer their insights on faith, civility, courage, and service on this edition of Connecting Faith.

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee was on the University of Northwestern Campus in St. Paul recently and we had a chance to talk about Christians in elected office, callings, and leadership. As a whole, Mike points out that Christians have “abdicated their role” in our society as the moral compass for America. He believes in strong godly principles that should guide our lives that extends to the workplace. In a world where someone who disagrees with us is demonized, Mike calls Christians to behave like “mature people who show respect for others.” How does this play out in his own life? Mike has built a team around him that strives for honesty, respect, and conservative principles.

When talking about conservative principles, we can scarcely fail to mention noted neurosurgeon, speaker, and author Dr. Ben Carson. He calls Christians to reject political correctness in favor of truth and calls us look back. “Why are we free today? Those before us were willing to stand against opposition.” God calls us to courage, even when speaking the truth is hard. What should we do to recover unity within the United States? Dr. Carson suggests that we learn to engage everyone, regardless of their viewpoint, in civil, respectful dialogue. “We the people of America are not each other’s enemies.” Ben shares that those who try to turn us against each other are the ones to be cautious of. “As long as they can keep us divided and at each other’s throats, they win.” Part of rebuilding our country is recognizing the inherent worth and value of those who disagree with us. It’s a long hard road, but Dr. Carson says with humility and a strong faith in God, we can start to turn the tide of the culture.

Ben talks about a prescription for America from his new book One  Nation: What We Can All Do To Save America’s Future.
