How can we flourish, in mind, body, and spirit?

Scripture tells us that the number one indicator of whether or not someone will flourish, is godliness.

“During his days, the godly will flourish. Peace will prevail as long as the moon is in the sky.” Psalm 72:7

Dr. Troy Spurrill expands on what it means to pursue godliness.

“To me being godly means striving for the righteousness God wants for us. Even though we’re imperfect, there’s a promise that the godly will flourish.”

Even if we are struggling with a chronic illness or life-altering disability, we know that eventually we will flourish.

“We know where we’re going; we know what we’re about. When times get tough, I know what’s ahead. Just having that hope and promise is fuel. When you can live in that hope through the tough times, it fuels you and there’s a depth to the energy that you didn’t have before and it allows you to take that next step. While we might not be flourishing all the time, there is hope in the promise of flourishing later on.”

Dr. Troy says hope is so powerful that it can often help just to have hope, even if our circumstances don’t change right away.

“At my clinic, we’ll assess people and not have done anything, but we’ve connected the dots for them. We show them that there is potential for improvement.”

He says people often will walk out of one of his assessments and ask if it is weird that they feel better already, even though nothing has happened yet.

“The answer is no. It’s completely normal and we see it all the time because when you have that hope, it’s inhibiting the fear, negative worry, and those other things that knock us down. When we don’t guard our thoughts, there are consequences to that. Hope is a cure to the misuse of our imagination.”

If you feel like you’re not flourishing in your life, ask God to fill you with His Spirit and the hope that can only come from Him.
