God’s presence is not confined to the church building – we can find Him working through tattoos, tofu, and pronouns, as Nancy Ortberg says. She joins Susie on the Thursday edition of Live the Promise to talk about learning to look for God in the everyday things of life.

Nancy says we need to be careful not to reduce connection with God to a check list.

“We get so prescriptive with the spiritual life. We prepackage what it means to have ‘quiet time’… we make it a formula and brag about it. In reality, He’s waiting for us to realize He invades all the parts of our days. If only we would pay attention.”

Here are some of the ways we can experience God.

• Music

• Nature

• Conversations

• Cooking

• A sunrise

• Hardships, disappointments and broken dreams

Nancy shares what she’s learned. What do the saints of old tell us?

“What’s true is I went to the depths of God, and let me tell you what I found. I found a good God. I found a really good God. At the center core of Him, He is absolutely completely good. To be not good and call yourself holy is a complete farce; our whole journey is to test and see that God is good.”

Nancy reminds us that God reveals Himself through Scripture but that He is much bigger than we understand.

“In our enthusiasm for the way we connect to God, we tell other people about it and it leads them to thinking ‘What’s wrong with me?’ There are a million different ways that God connects with people.”
