The Christian life is not about looking good, but about being redeemed. Listen as Susie talks with Mike Donehey, lead singer of Tenth Avenue North, about his music, faith journey, and pursuit of Christ as his ultimate treasure. Mike unpacks several songs from their new CD, Cathedrals:

Mike says this album grew out of a theme the group noticed as they toured. “As we’ve traveled around the country, it seems there’s this misconception that the spiritual people and the people God’s using are the people up on stage on Sunday morning. If you’re a pastor, a worship leader, or a missionary, you’re doing God’s work. But throughout the NT, we’re told that we, the body of Christ, are being built together into a living temple. We don’t go to cathedrals where God lives – we are cathedrals, where God’s presence lives. Every where you go, you make that place sacred when you walk through the door and bring God’s Spirit with you.”

We Won’t Numb the Pain

“Pain is often seen as such a negative – but the Holy Spirit comforts us in our struggles and we in turn are able to minister to others. We’re not willing to feel the pain necessary to wait for the comfort of the Holy Spirit. Instead we distract ourselves with triviality and entertainment to keep the pain at bay.”

Closer

Mike says this was written in response to the prayer he’s heard among Christian circles – “Lord, come closer.” He quotes A.W. Tozer. “When we pray for God to come near, it’s not in approximation, but to come near in our awareness of Him.” God is always near us, but we allow other things to cloud our ability to hear and sense Him.
