New movie releases seem to proliferate around the holidays, so clearly it’s once again time to go over the latest offerings with our friend the film critic and theologian Drew Trotter.

We gain perspective on the themes behind the major motion pictures making headlines this Christmas, and then take a look at some overlooked films that have redemptive story lines. You can also expect some recommendations on great video choices for the kids on this latest installment of Connecting Faith. Here’s where our conversation takes us:

We have yet another entry in the line of big budget Hollywood remakes of epic biblical tales. How does Exodus: Gods & Kings treat the biblical tale when it comes to accuracy? And how does it compare to the years’ other biblical blockbuster, Noah? Drew notes that, as Christians, we really can’t and shouldn’t expect non-Christians to present a biblical story with perfect accuracy. Yet, despite inaccuracies, films that portray major events in the Bible can still serve as open doors to faith conversations.

Is the two-part conclusion to big movie series, as we see in The Hunger Games & The Hobbit, the new trend? And is this good or bad news for moviegoers?

PG rated films seem to contain an increasing amount of violence. Is there any concern among film producers about moving in this direction? And should Christians be more thoughtful about how much violent content we’re taking in?

Drew offers his thoughts on the hit movie Interstellar. This Christopher Nolan film offers a form of redemption, but is it the sort that Christians would recognize?

Going behind the cameras, Drew speaks to the philosophies of many of the prominent movie makers. How do their beliefs influence their view of life, faith, and redemption?
