Let’s be honest, when we look at ourselves, when we asses ourselves, we give the most ‘air time’ to our flaws, our missteps, and our mistakes. Yet scripture tells us that we are a masterpiece (Ephesians 2:10), and that we’re crafted by God Himself, by His own hand (Psalm 139). Based on the precious, powerful truth from God’s Word, we may need to change how we think about ourselves.

It’s time for you and me to release our cares and our critics to the One who saved us, redeemed us, and re-named us. Here’s why:

When you look at your life from the inside of your mess—and apart from God’s involvement in your life, your assessment will always be incomplete. And when others toss out their assessments of you based on partial information, their assessments will always be incorrect.

Don’t let the reality of your value fall underfoot like a used up gum wrapper simply because you don’t feel or see your worth quite yet. Trust me. Better yet, trust God when He says that you’re worth far more than you can even comprehend. And don’t give away your power to those who know you either from a distance or through a skewed lens. They only know in part.

Imagine, Jesus up close and personal, with His arm around you, taking you through your story. He’s intimately familiar with and involved in every detail of your life.

People who stand at a distance and pride themselves on their acute ability to assess and constantly critique others are like static in God’s ears. And the truth is, most of the time they don’t know what they’re talking about.

We are made by Creator God for His divine purposes. No matter what anyone else thinks about us. We are image bearers of the Most High God.

These things are true about you, even when they don’t feel true:

You are a masterpiece, created by God Himself, for a very distinct purpose

The heavenly realm is close. God is nearer than you think—even when you least grasp or suspect it

Spiritual activity is happening all around you, for you, and because of you

Jesus cares deeply for you. He’s mighty and powerful, and intimately near you

When we compare our insides to everyone else’s outsides, we will always come up short. The truth is, anybody’s internal process will look vastly different and far messier than someone else’s external presentation. How we look and how we feel are two very different things.

Though the weight of our humanness compels us to look down and focus on the tangibles in front of us, Jesus invites us to look up and lay claim to the promises He’s offered us.

All of our emotions, memories, and regrets, and all of our passions, hopes, and dreams—they’re all tangled up together because we’re works in progress. And Jesus is deeply profoundly invested in helping us sort through our story so that we can live free. He knows we’re works in progress, yet He lovingly, patiently sticks with us every step of the way. And He’s not going anywhere.

You can trust Him. He’ll see your story all the way through to its beautiful conclusion.
