John Stonestreet, president of the Colson Center for Christian Worldview and host of Breakpoint, discusses Christianity’s influence for good in the world with Dr. Jeremiah Johnston.
Some people dismiss Christianity outright. While others don’t refute Christianity’s claims directly, they dismiss its ideals subtly. John states,
“The most dangerous ideas aren’t the ones argued, but the ones assumed. We live in what some sociologists call a ‘disenchanted society’ in which faith doesn’t deal with public truths about reality. Parents need to understand: if you don’t teach your kids how to think and how to discern, they will be brainwashed.”
There are numerous resources in print and digitally that parents can utilize to help provide guidance to their children. The key is that families understand Christianity’s relevance in their lives. Jeremiah explains,
“So many times, people think Christianity is the answer to yesterday’s problems and not today’s.”
If Christianity is not relevant today, it is easy to lose hope. John comments,
“Christians have no right to despair, because Christ is risen from the dead. The most significant contribution Christianity has made to the world – other than the message of salvation – is the idea that humans are made in the image of God. We want to keep human dignity.”
Diving deeper into these biblical questions, Jeremiah reads a question from a listener:
“What if God was petty and unforgiving like us humans on Earth?”
John answers, affirming biblical truth,
“What is so great about God, the Word says, ‘I’m not like you. I change not.’ His character cannot change. As Christians, we are to be known as great forgivers. We don’t form God in our image. God is immutable. He loves us with this compassionate passion. His love and forgiveness cannot fail because God is love.”
