One of the most widely circulated intellectual beliefs of our culture claims we can’t really know truth. It’s often stated as, what’s true for you isn’t true for me.
However, Greg Koukl says that we actually can know truth and truth isn’t as fluid as our culture would like to believe.
“This view is absolutely false. There are lots of things we know and we know that we know them. Reality has a way of getting our attention and teaching us about itself. This is amazingly simple to demonstrate.”
Greg says he finds it ironic that we spend loads of money to send our children to universities only to have them learn that we can’t really know anything anyway.
“The fact is, we can know many things. For instance, I dialed a number to connect myself to your studio to conduct this interview. I had on my schedule that we were going to have a broadcast today.”
Greg says that these are claims about reality that he was able to test out by calling the studio.
“I dialed the number; I got your board operator, now I’m talking to you. I tested the claim or belief against reality and I got enough feedback to know that my belief about reality, as far as it touched those issues, was actually true.”
Why would anyone be tempted to think we can’t know truth when we are learning truth all the time?
“If we couldn’t know at least some true things about our existence, we would be dead in a day.”
Greg says that the same tools we use to find truth about the world, we can use them to also discover truth about spirituality as well.
“I think we can and I think we can get reliable answers. There’s no reason for us to fall for this idea that we can’t know truth. Indeed the statement itself is a claim to know some truth. It turns out to be self-refuting on the face of it, yet this is what people fall for all the time.”
Greg Koukl started out thinking he was too smart to become a Christian and ended up dedicating his life to defending the Christian faith. A central theme of Greg’s speaking and writing is that Christianity can compete in the marketplace of ideas when it’s properly understood and properly articulated.
