  • Gather and Give: Sharing God’s Heart Through Everyday Hospitality
  • Amy also Shares Hospitality Tips for Everyday and the Holidays:-Keep pretty, seasonal paper napkins to put with plain dinner plates or disposable plates.-Forgo large formal centerpieces and arrange grocery store flowers in a variety of little repurposed containers and bottles. Add in a few little flickering votives for a simple, lovely table!

-When hosting friends or family for dinner, serve what you know! Make and serve something you feel confident in. If you’re a spaghetti person, then make spaghetti. If you’re unsure of your cooking skills, then get takeout or grocery-store-prepared foods.

-Learn to ask good questions. This is where loving people really manifests itself. Listen well, ask follow-up questions, then lean in with encouragement or gracious wisdom the Lord has shown you. Be sure the conversation is more about them than you.

-When guests leave, make notes in your phone contact about what you learned about them: the names of their children, a reminder that they just lost a parent, if they like Broadway or a particular kind of music, or if they prefer chocolate desserts to fruit desserts!

-Learn to laugh about things. If something goes wrong when you host – and it almost always will! – it’s not the end of the world. Laugh about it! Your humanity is appealing; it makes them like you and creates common ground. Everyone has burned the bread!

-Keep plastic deli-style containers on hand for packing up leftovers! Your gathering leftovers are perfect for giving to a widow, a young mom, a co-worker and anyone else who needs to be cared for! People who are cooked for feel cared for!
