“As the years have passed I’ve come under increasing conviction that having a relationship with Jesus Christ is healthful, not only presently but eternally.”

Cary Humphries spent nearly forty years working at Cargill. He’s followed Jesus throughout most of his 86-year life, and he urges us to remember – whatever God calls us to do, we’ll do in His strength rather than our own.

Cary has a heart for the fatherless, those in prison, those with failing marriages, and those who don’t know Jesus. He spends much of his time meeting with those who need the Gospel message and offering encouragement from the Bible. His view of ministry is to stay humble and flexible.

“If you look at the successful people in the Bible, generally they started out by saying, ‘Oh you got the wrong guy. I’m not up for that.’

Yet when we humble ourselves and ask God to use us, He’ll open up opportunities we never would have dreamed of. At Cary’s age, he’s traveled the world, raised children with his wife, and shared the Gospel in many countries. He’s along in years, but trusts God’s timeline for his life. From his perspective, his commitment may be what is keeping him healthy.

“If I were a full-time recreational retiree, I might not still be here. Maybe God has a reason for keeping me here.”

Cary reminds us to stay steadfast and focused on Christ. Whatever age we may be, wherever we may be living, we can be faithful and used for God’s kingdom.

“I’m 86 and a half and United States health methods have extended our life. But I think God is still in control. I have some small health issues, but they don’t keep me from going places, getting up early and meeting with people that I think are lost.”

Cary doesn’t know when God will call him home, but as long as he’s here, he’ll be serving the Lord. You may have financial difficulties, health issues, or relational strain but God has placed you here for a purpose. While you live, there’s work to be done. What can you do today to share the message of Christ with someone?
