What can we learn from the beatitudes that Jesus shared? What does it mean to be blessed? Listen as author and pastor David Timms returns to the program to talk about the power of our words in blessing and strengthening others.

David defines a blessing as “any word spoken empowered by God that changes the life and destiny of a person.” With that in mind, we can use language as a tool to cut others down or merely share information, or we can use it to build bridges and transform others.

David uses the beatitudes from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount as an example of God-empowered language.

“We want to dissect them and analyze them… it was [intended to be] a blessing to the people that Jesus looked at. This is a message for us all that God can take these words, whatever they may be, and use them… if we are open.”

• Blessed are the poor in spirit – for anyone who feels crushed or without spiritual pedigree

• Blessed are those who mourn

• Blessed are the meek – who can push back and assert themselves but choose not to

• Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness

• Blessed are the merciful

• Blessed are the pure in heart

• Blessed are the peacemakers – those who “have the conviction and courage to identify the painful labels that we speak to each other and refute them”

• Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake

David’s book is The Power of Blessing: How a Carefully Chosen Word Changes Everything.
