The Bible describes God as the divine bridegroom and us as His bride, but what does that really mean?

Dee Brestin knows the pain and heartache of losing her long-time husband, Steve to cancer. She shares how God’s love has ministered to her as her divine bridegroom.

“It’s meant so much to me. As a widow I’ll often cry out, ‘God, be my husband.’ That isn’t just with practical needs like helping me to figure out things that Steve figured out in the past, but just this sense of intimacy, that He loves me. My husband loved me and I loved being loved by Him and I miss that. However, I do have this sense that God loves me too.”

Dee knows what it’s like to feel God’s love and she wants to help other women experience it as well.

“I want women to know that. I speak to a lot of women in prison. Many of them have never known the love of an earthly father or an earthly bridegroom that has been good. Even if you’ve never had this, you do have a heavenly bridegroom who rejoices over you and you can meet Him.”

Dee wasn’t always able to believe in this love from God. She shares the pivotal moment in her life when His love became real to her.

“After Steve died, I was curled up in the fetal position. I said, ‘Lord, you promised to be my husband, but you don’t even have a body, how can you be my husband?’”

After she cried out to God, Dee had a flashback to when she was a first time mom nursing her child.

“He would cry out in the night and I would run to him but he would not latch on. He would scream and holler like I wasn’t there but I was there. Finally, he would find me and latch on. At that moment, I felt like God was saying to me, ‘Dee, I am right here and I love you. You just need to rest in the truth that I really do love you.’”

Today, ask God to help you experience His love for you and rest in the truth that He loves you for eternity.
