Have you ever wondered what Christianity is like across the pond? Amy Boucher Pye, author of  says that while Christianity might not be as prevalent in the U.K. as it is in America, it is no less vibrant where it’s found.

“I think there are a lot fewer Christians in the U.K. because we don’t have quite the cultural Christianity as it were, but there are a lot of very committed Christians and a lot of wonderful churches. There are some really wonderful events that we have in the U.K., things like Spring Harvest, and New Wine, these massive events that bring together all kinds of different parts of the church, the old and the young and we just have amazing worship and Bible teaching.”

Even though Christianity isn’t as common in the U.K., Amy says that those who profess faith tend to be very committed.

“There’s a lot of really thriving churches. You’ve got Holy Trinity Brompton where the Alpha Movement came out of, you’ve got more of the conservative evangelical, and then you’ve got a lot of parish churches like the church where my husband is a vicar. It’s a neighborhood church and so it’s evangelical, but it’s reaching out to the neighborhoods. There’s a whole breadth of expression of Christianity.”

Despite the fact that Christianity is not mainstream in the U.K., Amy says that England does have it’s own brand of nominal Christianity, just like the United States.

“The church and state are not separated like they are in the states and so you can also have this kind of churchianity. You have this school where you go to chapel, but you don’t really believe it and it’s just part of the culture. I see that as more of a negative thing where you don’t have the faith maybe thriving as much because it’s part of just what’s done culturally.”
