“We are made by the Lord to attach to Him. If we are not attaching to the right things we will find something to attach to.”

We are all struggling with addicting and damaging behavior. Some addictions are socially approved, such as overeating, and others are not.

According to Dr. Bill Dyment, co-author of , it’s time to stop making excuses for our behavior and starting embracing the life God has for us.

Many people are in denial that they make excuses in their lives. The first step we can take is admitting that we make excuses and ask God to help us see them.

“When we are in denial, we don’t look at anything else.”

Often, we aren’t even aware of the excuses we are making. When it comes down to it, they are blind spots that even the most godly people have. Dr. Bill Dyment shares the areas where we might be making excuses.

Health and Wellness

We make excuses for not caring for our physical bodies.

“Good people are dying years, even decades early, because of health issues they have ignored.”

Social Connections

We make excuses for not building strong relationships with others.

“We are still a country that has quite a bit of wealth, but we also have social poverty. We don’t have enough social connections and that makes a huge difference in our health and other areas.”

Communication

We make excuses for our failure to communicate effectively and sensitively to our family, friends and co-workers.

Time Management

We spend great amounts of time entertaining ourselves and not enough time practicing the gifts that God has given us to use for His glory.

Finances

We make excuses for spending money on things that we know we shouldn’t. We fail to steward our finances in a way that honors God.

Serving Others

Often we make excuses for why we don’t spend more time serving others. Jesus came to the earth to be a servant. Are we serving those around us like God wants us too? Do we use our time for selfish gain?

Bill and his co-author, Marcus Dayhoff, have created a free Fire Your Excuses Self-Assessment to help recognize where we might be making excuses in our lives.
