Is it important for the President of the United States to be a Christian, is it necessary?

David Wheaton explain that while it’s critical for the president to be a Christian, it might not be required.

“I think it would be great if we had a candidate or a president who was a born again Christian and had Biblical values like many of the founding leaders of this country, but I think there are many people who can have strong ‘Christian- friendly’ values without being a Christian.”

While these people may be few and far between, it is possible for candidates to hold a fairly Judeo-Christian worldview without being born again. It is of utmost importance that a candidate has a proper perspective of the function of government.

“Praise what is good and punish what is evil, that’s really the role of government that God established.”

All of mankind has been endowed with a sin nature from birth, and as a result, many who have reached an office of political power have fallen prey to the temptation to use their position for evil.

“When many get in power there’s a temptation to not praise good and punish evil, but to do the opposite, to foster evil and punish good.”

As Christians, we should look for candidates who at least have the values and character qualities that fit the Biblical description of a leader. In David’s opinion if a candidate cannot protect the sanctity of marriage and the life of the unborn, Christians should be very concerned.

“If the candidate can’t get those two issues right, to me at least, that throws their whole candidacy into question because it calls into question the kind of judgment or wisdom that person has about the core institutions of a sound and stable society.”
