One of musical duo Shane and Shane‘s favorite prayers featured on their album Psalms: Volume Two is One Thing: Psalm 27.

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” Psalm 27:1

The keyword is Psalm 27 is the word my.

“You can’t leave out that word; that’s a special word.

Within this Psalm we aren’t focused on ourselves, we are highlighting the Giver of our light and salvation, Jesus Christ.

“It gives us a language to say when we say my we are not highlighting us. We are highlighting the giver of salvation. I’m not exalting me; I’m exalting the one who gives me life, gives me strength and gives salvation.”

The word my is also important because it reminds us that God is our personal Savior. He lives inside of us and is with us always, no matter the circumstances.

“One thing have I asked of the Lordthat will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.” Psalm 27:4

Shane and Shane wrote One Thing: Psalm 27 as an inspiration to gaze upon the beauty of God and hold Him in higher esteem than anything else.

“Scripture confronts us and diagnoses our hearts. As I read through that psalm, what is the one thing I’m seeking? Is it to gaze upon His beauty, or to gaze upon the things that He has made?”
