“It’s Ebola.”

For years, Dr. Kent Brantly and his wife Amber worked together in medical missions with a passion to serve those in need of treatment and share the good news of Jesus. There had been a severe Ebola outbreak in Liberia, and Kent was one of the doctors treating local patients. He’d taken many precautions to protect himself, but somehow he became exposed to the virus. When he woke up sick one morning, with a condition that steadily worsened, Kent feared the worst. While Amber and their children waited in the United States, Kent became a patient at his own clinic.

“On one hand, I felt a tremendous amount of peace. That night when Lance and John told me my test result I was incredibly calm, and it was all very surreal and weighty, but calm and peaceful.”

“That peace persisted throughout my illness. I never felt consumed by fear, but I certainly did deal with fear and anxiety. That peace didn’t take away the fear and anxiety but it was present in spite of those other feelings.”

Kent did struggle with loneliness as the clinic and country became overwhelmed with Ebola patients. During the hardest times, he was reminded of a lesson he has been processing for the last decade: God will give us everything we need to be faithful to Him.

“In terms of material things, He will give me what I need to accomplish the tasks that is set out before me.”

As he was facing what seemed like a death sentence he came to the understanding that nothing can separate Him from the love of God, even death itself.

“I didn’t need a promise of healing. I didn’t even have to be reunited with my family. I just had to know that no matter what, whether I lived or died, nothing could separate me from the love of God.”

God used the wisdom of doctors and medicine to heal Kent of Ebola after he was transferred back to the United States. Kent and Amber were surprised by how much attention their story received, but they continue to use the media as an opportunity to share their faith in Christ. Kent shares his story in the book  .
