Highlight: Pressured perfection

Do you ever feel like the version of yourself you present to the world has to be perfect? Well, you aren’t alone.

Edie Wadsworth says that for many years she thought she had to be perfect, but perfect isn’t actually what helps people.

“So often in our culture, especially with our technology and social media culture, we think we always have to present this sort of perfect picture to the world. I did that for a long time too, but what I realized is that it’s not the shiny part of my life that can be a lifeline and a benefit to my neighbor, it’s actually my struggle and my heart.”

We too easily believe that people only want to see the smiling face version of ourselves. In reality, everyone is hurting, and everyone believes they’re the only one.

“If I can be honest with that and share that, God can use that not only to heal my own heart, but to bring hope and peace and healing to my neighbor.”

Before we can share our story with anyone else, we have to come to grips with our own story, for ourselves.

“The first step might just be a willingness to look honestly at our past and our wounds. What’s keeping us from really living our lives fully for other people? What’s keeping us from sharing ourselves and our gifts? A lot of times it’s just fear of rejection, doubt, insecurity. We don’t really believe that we’re a loved and being willing to just come with open hands, bring our wounds, bring our hurts, bring our suffering to a God who can redeem and restore it.”

Sharing our hurt can help those who are also hurting. If we never share our miseries and only share the good in our lives, how can we help or relate to anyone?
