Highlight: Fear and deception of abortion

Fear is at the root of abortion. Fear fuels the deception that abortion is the answer to the dilemma of a crisis pregnancy.

Lauren Roman shares her story of how perfectionism and fear of disappointing others led to her decision to have an abortion at the age of 18.

“Abortion is presented as a false solution. It doesn’t make the problem go away, it doesn’t erase it; it just creates a whole new set of problems.”

“I had grown up being such an over-achieving, authority-pleasing person. For me, the idea of just disappointing my parents was beyond devastating… my parents basically never had to punish me because just the thought of disappointing them was punishment enough.”

“Sadly, I was so afraid to let them down that I didn’t even give them the chance to show me love. I created this need for perfection that, sadly, wasn’t something they put on me; it was something I put on myself.”

Lauren’s own fear caused her to isolate and make a choice based on the lie that she had to please her parents.

“When I finally did tell them several years later about the abortion their reaction was, ‘We are so sorry that you didn’t feel like you could come to us.’ That was the first thing that they said.”

“Obviously, it wasn’t an ideal situation, but had I gone to them, they would have been supportive, and they would have another grandchild right now.”

Reflecting on her decision, Lauren laments the pressure women face that causes them to feel trapped and act out of desperation.

“It’s very sad, I think – the situations that we put ourselves in, and we cut ourselves off from potential sources of hope and support because of our own fear. Ultimately, it boils down to fear.”

Lauren now ministers to teens at Pregnancy Resource Centers, where she first found healing and freedom at a post-abortion Bible study in Los Angeles.

Recognizing that fear and deception are the enemy’s greatest weapons, Lauren teaches kids that they don’t have to stay on the wrong path.  Jesus can free us from the fear and lies. She shares with them her life verse:

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1
