Highlight: Our dreams or God's destiny

Sometimes the smallest and seemingly most insignificant decisions make the biggest impact on our lives.

Dr. Michael Guillen knows this very well. His life was changed forever when a girl named Laurel, who would later become his wife, slipped a Valentine’s Day card under his door in college.

“And there it was under my door, I opened it up and it changed my life forever. What if Laurel hadn’t done that? That’s the world we live in, it’s so unpredictable.”

When the world we live in is so unpredictable it’s worth not holding on to our dreams too tightly.

“I will speak to groups of kids in college or high school and I’ll say to them it’s great for you to dream; they are important to have and by all means pursue them, but along the way, don’t be like a horse that has their eyes blinded.”

“Don’t be so single-mindedly focused on your dream, that you miss out on something that will happen to you along the way that will edit, or even replace your dream with what I consider to be your God given destiny.”

What’s better our dreams or God’s destiny for us?

“The destiny God has for each of us will blow away any dream that we can conjure up for ourselves. That’s exactly what happened to me, my dream was just to become a scientist.”

When Michael was headed to teach at Harvard he thought he had already achieved his dream. Instead God had bigger things in store for him.

“I thought that was it, I had gotten the brass ring. I was at the end of the line. This is fantastic, top of the world. I had no ideas of being a big-shot national correspondent on a major broadcast television and having my own show on national T.V. primetime, or making a movie with an award-winning director and award-winning actress.”

Even though it wasn’t a part of his dream, it was a part of something much bigger.
