A strained relationship exists between the church and the millennial generation. Millennials are abandoning churches in record numbers.

The American Research Group has discovered some staggering statistics about those Millennials that still attend church.

•  40% do not consider themselves born-again Christians.

•  35% believe that the Bible contains errors.

•  30% believe that other holy books, such as the Qur’an, are inspired by God.

•  65% believe if you’re a good person you’ll go to heaven.

David Wheaton shares what we can learn about the relationship between church and culture from these statistics.

“Statistics like these show how much of an impact the culture of secular humanism has had upon those growing up in churches.”

Many millennials do not have a complete understanding of the core tenants of the Christian faith. How did this happen?

“I think you have to lay the responsibility first at the feet of the parents, you can’t necessarily blame the churches first and foremost because it’s the parents’ responsibility to raise their children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”

When core beliefs about Scripture, morality, sexuality are not taught from a Biblical perspective, they are shaped by the secular culture.

“Their views are not much different than the world’s views and that’s extremely troubling, a lot of them leave church as they go off to college and never come back.”

How can this pattern be reversed?

“I think it starts with having them understand what the Gospel is about, the conviction of sin in their life and coming to repentance then faith in Christ. When you come to a Gospel understanding, you’re regenerated and justified then your views begin to come around.”
