Have you ever had one of those bad days with God? You know, the ones where you feel like no matter what you do, you’re somehow failing? I don’t know what we think we’re failing at, but we believe that God is definitely going to disown us after today.

If we’re honest, most of us can say we’ve had those days. Those days where we believe we aren’t doing as good as we should be, and we don’t feel the peace of God like we usually do. We have some conflict going on or stress we can’t control. We are frustrated and irritable and can’t for the life of us figure out why. And because of all of those feelings, we think God is mad at us again, and now he’s ready to throw in the towel.

But the truth is, we have a history with God.

I know in the moment, in the thick of the bad day, it’s easy to let your thoughts wonder to a place of “Well, this is it. God must be so frustrated with me because I just can’t get it together.” You feel like you are nothing but a constant failure. It’s humiliating, defeating, and ultimately leaves you wanting to throw in the towel.

But let’s take a step back… what about all the good days? What about all the times you stepped out in faith, took him at his word, journeyed to distant lands, and felt so close to him? What about those days where you felt his pleasure gushing over you, and nothing but pure joy bubbled out of your heart? What about those times he whispered to you – either through scripture, a friend, or a quiet moment – that he will never leave you or forsake you? You are the apple of his eye. You are the very reason he sacrificed on the cross.

Imagine my husband and I getting into a fight. It’s hard, uncomfortable, and creates a lot of tension for the both of us, but we don’t call off the relationship. We have almost five years of marriage under our belts, and a few fights here and there are nothing compared to the thousands of amazing moments we’ve had together.

You see, in a very similar way you and God have a history together. Every time you chose to listen to him instead of other voices, you were creating a history. Every sweet moment spent in silence with him has built a tender intimacy. He’s not going to give up on you. Yes, you have moments of weakness where your sinful nature wars for control, but he knows what you are capable of, the strength that you have, and the determination and grit that’s in your soul. This is why he doesn’t give up on you in a hard season. This is why a bad day is not going to ruin things.

If you don’t have much of a history yet, then look back at the gesture of love he made on the cross, and let it begin there. He loves us with an everlasting, incomprehensible love. So the next time you have a bad day, look up and remember the history of your relationship. Don’t let Satan make you believe you’re a hopeless cause. God will never give up on his beloved.

We all have bad days. Let’s remember the good ones and keep moving forward.
