Two of the most beautiful words are “But God…” On the Thursday edition of Live the Promise we hear from pastor Herbert Cooper. He shares how God is in the business of turning darkness into redemption.

Herbert grew up in what he calls a “dysfunctional family.” He was a successful high school athlete who enjoyed playing football and being involved with teen girls. But his popularity hid sexual abuse and an unhealthy home life. One night a high-powered recruiter was scheduled to come see Herbert play. At the last minute the recruiter rescheduled, and Herbert decided to go to an FCA meeting for free pizza.

Herbert heard the gospel that night.

“I walked in bound and trapped and bitter and angry and I walked out with my weights lifted off of me. I began to live my life for Jesus Christ.”

Herbert shares what we can learn from “But God” moments.

• They come when you least expect it.

• They often include forgiveness of others and yourself for past mistakes. Herbert explains. “Forgiveness is a one-player game. It’s between you and your heavenly Father.” Herbert worked through the healing and forgiveness of his abuser and was able to release what she’d done and give it to God.

• They are freeing, though painful.

“The review mirror is a lot smaller than the windshield – God wants us to move forward. We can’t go back and get a brand-new start. But we can start today and get a brand-new end.”

• They can be shared. Herbert invites us to share our testimony with others to encourage and strengthen them.

• They start with God and His promises.

“It takes a lot of grit to get in God’s Word and get the mind of Christ. To realize I’m not my past, I’m not my mistakes, I’m not what they say about me. I’m who God says I am.”
