“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.” Matthew 5:13

Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth . . .

Salt seasons. Salt preserves. But during Jesus’ time, salt was used for much more.

Salt protects. Newborn babies were rubbed in salt.

Salt purifies. People bathed in salt to for ritual purification.

Salt heals. People used salt for medicinal purposes.

“. . . but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet” Matthew 5:13.

A clay pot usually sat on the floor that contained salt rocks. Often, dirt trickled in, contaminating the salt. No longer pure or useful, it was thrown out the front door.

We season and preserve our culture by staying true to our calling in Christ. And this means so much. It means that when we hear our friends telling inappropriate jokes, we walk away. It means that when we see something that lacks integrity in the workplace, we don’t participate.

Being salty in our family means if we are not feeling loved, we continue to extend love.

It means that when we are on a business trip, we stay in for the evening when everybody else is going out.

It means that when tempted at the computer, we push away and do something worthwhile.

Being salty means so many things but the simplicity of it and the importance of it is where we find our strength to find our voice in the world. Because people are looking at us to say and to do something of worth.

God is calling us to stand up for the things that we believe in, to stand our ground.

God has called us to be unchanging elements to the world. We are to preserve it. Impact it. And heal it. We can be the most valuable substance on the face of this earth and bring hope to a dying world by actually doing something. That is my challenge for you this week:  Salt your world.

Are you salty? How do you salt your world?
