A penny for your thoughts… Truth be told, I believe our thoughts are worth more to us than a penny. Our thoughts are the very things that drive us to success or failure. Our thoughts give life to our deepest, most secret beliefs. Gone unchecked and left by themselves to rule the day, we are mercilessly swept away in their wake. Sometimes it works out fantastic – other times it is disastrous.

I remember a time when I was about to be pulled off a cliff by my thoughts running wild. I saw the drop off and despaired. Then, within the last few feet of safety, I put a stop to their erratic behavior and forceful will. I sat them all down, and sorted them out – going through them one by one – to see if I could find a rhyme and reason to their haste. I found that they are not all bad, only misdirected and unorganized.

I turned them away from the cliff they were about to pull me over, got rid of a few, added some, and put new ones in the lead. The pace I was being pulled at changed. It was calm – serene. I was no longer in danger and out of control. I was free.

The Lord is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” Deut. 31:8

There’s a reason why it is good to take a few moments to ourselves every day – it gives us the opportunity to sift out the truth from the lies. There’s a reason why it is good to meditate on the Word of God – to set our thoughts on his promises. Paying a penny of time for our thoughts gives us the opportunity to right our perspective and the course of the day.
