On this edition of The Exchange, listen as Trevin Wax, managing editor of The Gospel Project interviews Pastor J.D. Greear about the importance of the presence of the Holy Spirit in our daily lives.

“The normal Christian life is not doing a bunch of stuff for God or learning a bunch of stuff about God, it’s about following Jesus and yielding yourself to him.”

In his book, , J.D. Greear explains how the Holy Spirit inside us is better than Jesus beside us.

Any Christian might think that this statement is preposterous. How could there be anything better than having Jesus leading and teaching His people on Earth?

According to scripture, the Holy Spirit is an even more helpful alternative than having Jesus by our side.

“Nevertheless, I tell you the truth; it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you” – John 16:7 (ESV).

The “Helper” referred to in John 16:7 is the Holy Spirit. God uses the Holy Spirit to be present in the lives of each of His followers, leading them along the path He has set out for them.

Many people consider the Holy Spirit to be simply a theory. However, it is so much more than that. The Holy Spirit is a person, living and active in the life of the Christian, leading and guiding us along the path of life.

“It wasn’t until the Holy Spirit’s presence was upon me that I realized that he wasn’t telling me to overcome my addiction for him, he was calling to yield myself to him so he could overcome those addictions through me.”

On our own we are nothing. Fortunately, as Christians, we have the Holy Spirit inside of us to help us. All we have to do is simply allow the Holy Spirit to work in and through us to do the will of God. It’s not a matter of us doing anything with our own willpower it’s a matter of letting the Spirit shine through us to put the focus on Jesus.

How important is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is not only important it is essential in spreading the Word of God. The Disciples were told to not even lift a finger in regards to fulfilling the great commission until the Holy Spirit came upon them during Pentecost.

The presence of the Holy Spirit is a requirement to serve God in this life. Do you have the Holy Spirit in your life?
