When filmmaker Ann McElhinney was granted an interview with Kermit Gosnell on background for The Gosnell Movie, she didn’t expect to be seated without a plexiglass barrier, or even a table to separate them. You do not want to miss Ann’s chilling account of coming face-to-face with an evil human being. Even as Gosnell invaded her space and touched her to establish his dominance, Ann found herself thinking how hard it is to accept the banality of evil.

Ann and her husband Phelim McAleer have carried out a historic crowd-funding campaign on Indiegogo for this crime drama about abortionist Kermit Gosnell and the media cover-up.

When we spoke with Phelim McAleer about his experience attending the Gosnell trial, he stated that he had been pro-choice going into the experience. I hope skeptics will consider this project in light of that fact. The people telling this story had their hearts pierced by the truth and they cannot keep quiet as a result.

Gosnell was convicted in 2013 of three counts of first-degree murder of infants born alive and then murdered after illegal late-term abortions, and one count of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Karnamaya Mongar, who died of an overdose of sedatives. Among lesser charges, he was found guilty of 211 counts of not waiting 24 hours after consulting with a patient before performing an abortion. He is now serving three life sententces.

At the time of the trial abortion proponents cast Gosnell as an outlier, yet they did nothing to stop him nor others of his ilk. The hundreds and thousands of children who perished at Gosnell’s facility stand as a silent rebuke to those who would couch those defenseless lives as mere potential to be “chosen” or disposed of.

The Gosnell Movie will cast this story for what it is:  a portrait of America’s biggest serial killer. They will tell the story as a true crime drama.

Although the story of Kermit Gosnell is despicable and dark, the fact that these journalists are not only willing to tell it, but are also willing to risk exposing the scandalous media cover-up is truly inspiring and a cause for great hope. The first step to healing any terrible wrong is bringing it into the light of truth. I anticipate that The Gosnell Movie will do so in the most compelling way.
