Sara Hagerty dreamed of having children one day. When she and her husband were confronted with disappointment month after month, she watched God open doors she never expected. Sara joins the program and shares how God became her joy when she wrestled with the sadness of infertility.

“I had an opportunity. I could escape, and run, and harden and let myself feel a bitterness which has cloaked my real emotions, or I could crack open before God and say ‘this hurts.'”

Sara chose vulnerability. She poured herself into writing and ministry, all the while trusting God with her pain and broken dreams.

“We get a chance to cry before God and let Him hear our cries. When I started to have that emotional integrity, I realized He was a God who was near to the broken-hearted.”

Sara and her husband chose to adopt after several years. Sara now knows a few things about God that she didn’t know fully before this journey started.

• God is tender and merciful.

• He loves us in a deeper and more powerful way than we can grasp.

• God’s work in our lives is ongoing, not merely a one-time movement to bring us to salvation.

• Sometimes we carry an “orphan mentality” and forget our identity as a child of God.

Sara and her husband adopted four children.

“The process itself was painful and arduous but once we brought them into the fold, it only took months for us to bond. I thought I was rescuing them, but God used it to crack me open. He’s done a dual work – me watching my children get healed and fall in love with God and secretly saying, ‘It may have just been about You and me.'”

God then surprised Sara and her husband with a biological son – whom they named Boaz.
