The Bible is full of verses encouraging Christ-followers not to worry but to trust God. This is easier said than done.

Journalist Michael Ross encourages Christians and spreads the message that it’s okay to worry.

“A lot of well-meaning Christians will take those verses and say ‘Wow… that means I’m not supposed to be worried, but yet, I’m feeling worried.’”

As Christians, we feel like we shouldn’t have these fears and when we feel them rise up inside of us we internalize them.

“We kind of go underground with these fears because we feel ashamed that we’re worried and other well-meaning folks come along and give us bad advice.”

Often, those struggling with worry will be told that if they read their Bible more, or pray more, their worry will dissipate. While practicing these healthy spiritual disciplines can help us worry less, it is often not enough to eliminate worry completely.

John 16:33 says,

“I have said these things to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Even if we are walking in step with God, we will encounter trouble that leads us to worry. Instead of being surprised, we should lay the worry at the foot of the cross.

“Let’s just admit that we struggle with worry. Let’s do something about it, let’s help each other, guide each other, and support each other through this.”

What happens when we go underground?

When we internalize our worry it grows inside us. Sometimes we even “medicate” with other things to numb the pain. This can lead to addictions and other complications. Even though it’s terrifying, simply admitting that we are afraid and worried is the first step to worrying less.

“There’s such peace and such healing that comes from admitting this, sharing it with others, and not suppressing it.”

Not only should we admit it to other trustworthy friends, we should admit it to God, though He already knows.

“‘God, I admit I’m weak, I’m scared, and I don’t know what to do.’ Those are the steps toward healing.”
