What will it take for America to turn back to God? On this edition of Live the Promise Susie talks with pastor, author, and Faith Radio programmer Dr. Tony Evans about the power of prayer and repentance in our country.
“Freedom is the opportunity to choose.” We in America enjoy an unprecedented amount of freedom – but a shift has taken place over the last fifty years. Dr. Evans points out the areas of life that are being shaken because we’ve pushed God from the public square:
• The economy – Dr. Evans calls money “one of the greatest gods in western civilization”
• The family structure
• Ethics and morality
• The freedom to speak about our faith
“It was only after Moses held up the rod that the waters [of Yam Suph] opened. It was only after the boy gave Jesus his lunch that 5000 were fed. Often God is waiting on us to act in faith. You cannot wait on God for what God is waiting on you for.”
Dr. Evans puts the responsibility squarely on the church. “The storm that’s coming is a storm of our own brewing.” What can we do to turn things back? He shares his thoughts on the importance of holding solemn assemblies.
“A solemn assembly is a sacred gathering of God’s people,” which includes fasting and seeking the face of God. “God always promises in His Word – ‘Return to me, and I will return to you.’ He will be with us when we are returned to His authority in our lives.”
We also discuss the danger of idolatry. Idolatry, according to Dr. Evans, is any unauthorized noun that you look to to get your needs met. Dr. Evans calls us to examine our hearts first and ask God to reveal our idols. Then, act on what He shows us and enlist other believers for accountability and repentance. Revival and repentance start with us.
