Launching your full-time career in our part-time economy

Yes, the economy continues to grow (despite misleading numbers from the government), but the types of jobs that baby boomers and the generations preceding them enjoyed have seemingly dried up across the country.

What has replaced that old economy a part-time, low-paying, experience-and-expertise-driven job market.

How in the world does one — whether new to the labor force or looking for a new job — find full-time work, not to mention a career?

Robert Dickie III is the President of Crown Financial Ministries. As a former recipient of food stamps, now the leader of a prominent organization, Dickie is uniquely able to comment on some of the issues plaguing job seekers in a improving, but still sluggish economy.

Dickie joined Dr. Bill Maier Live! to talk about his book, , and to share 3 “anchors” that keep job seekers from not just landing a job — but finding a career:

1. Fear

Dickie says,

“I think a lot of times, we have an anchor of fear; we don’t want to change, we’re fearful of failure. So a way to get over that is creating a plan, working with mentors, seeking out advisors in your life that can provide you wise counsel. You know, the Bible says, ‘there is wisdom in a multitude of counselors.’

He continues:

“They say, ‘the difference between a dream and a goal is…a goal is a dream, but with actual steps and metrics you are shooting for each and every day.'”

2. Money

“A lot of times, we can start to live our lives where we’ve accumulated all sorts of debt…we live in a highly consumptive society. So I really encourage people: try to reduce your debt burden as much as possible, get out of debt if at all possible. Try to have as much margin in your life; you want time margin and you want financial margin.”

3. Spiritual

“There are times in our lives where we can kind of get off track, and we’re not putting Christ first; we’re not in alignment and living our lives the way that we should be. And when that happens, I believe we introduce stress into our life and into our family that prevents us from having the success that God wants us to have. And unless we deal with those types of spiritual anchors, I believe that we will continue to struggle.
