On this episode of “Real Recovery” Bill Arnold and George Fraser welcome Lloyd Hyde to share his remarkable story.

But first they discuss step 4, which is the search for a moral inventory of causes and conditions which includes the idolatry of a person’s addictions.

“If anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me” Matthew 9:23

The question was posed, “What disqualifies and keeps a person from receiving a gift?” The answer, by not accepting it. That gift being referenced, is the gift of eternal life from God. He is the solution of filling the void people can feel.

That void was evident in Lloyd Hyde’s life. Lloyd grew up in a violent home with an abusive father. He started drinking at 13, using cocaine and meth heavily at 23,  during this time he was also selling drugs. Lloyd says his first time on meth, “it hooked me right away.” The only person that he felt cared for him was his grandfather, who died too quickly and he hated God for it.

Lloyd continued in his violent nature and was in prison by 19. Though Lloyd describes the worst incident, which included riding a stolen bike, being pulled over and found with drug paraphernalia. The situation escalated Hyde assaulting the police officer, smashing his cell phone to prevent contacts from being known, and telling the officer to, “shoot me!”

Knowing about Teen Challenge, Lloyed finally petitioning entering the program. Teen Challenge actually said no the first time because of his violent past, however he tried again and was accepted. This was after one judge said no, and a second said, this is your one chance, if you fail you will go to prison!

Lloyd tells of his recovery and how he has now found God.

Utterly hopeless
