How can we develop our spiritual lives? On this edition of Live the Promise Susie welcomes Faith Radio host Bill Arnold back to the studio to unpack the importance of spiritual disciplines.

Bill shares his own experience. “When I came to Christ, my spiritual mentor trained me to start giving thanks for the things that are not subject to change. Christ died on the cross – Christ rose from the dead. My name is written in the book of life. I can develop a muscle of giving thanks for things that aren’t subject to change.”

What happens when we get distracted in the midst of our disciplines? Susie points out the grace that we have to mess up, do things imperfectly, and return to the habit.

“Get reset, and get refocused; we can be assured of His glad welcome.”

Susie and Bill touch on a number of disciplines that a Christian can use to mature and grow closer to God:

Prayer
Solitude
Spending time in the Word
Silence
Healthy eating
Stretching
Physical activity

The power of a discipline is its ability to bring us closer to God while shoring up our lives against attacks of the enemy. Part of spending quiet time with God is training yourself to hear His voice in the noise and activity of the day, so you can recognize His leading while ignoring the voice of your accuser. When we practice these in community with others, we can ensure a strong walk of faith and a close-knit body of Christ.

Bill says, these are not meant to be hoarded, but shared. When we share these disciplines and what we’re learning with others, our own faith is strengthened and clarified.

“Get it out of your head, and into the lives of others.”
