How can we see our lives and journeys as part of a larger story? We hear Susie’s powerful conversation with Jon Bloom, president of Desiring God, and pastor Max Lucado.

Jon shares his thoughts.

“We all have moments of being disappointed where we are either relieved of an appointment that we’ve been given, or we’re not given something we wanted. When disappointment comes, we need to call to mind the truth that Joseph discovered after being disappointed by his brothers – ‘You meant it for evil, God meant it for good.’ Follow your emotion of disappointment to its roots. It was appropriate for Joseph to feel disappointment with his brothers. What they did was evil. However, if he started feeling this sense of disappointment in God with thoughts like ‘It’s not fair, I deserve…’ the roots of that disappointment are going down into pride. The soil of selfishness gives root to a kind of disappointment that is toxic. Disappointment that comes out of the soil of faith is the kind of disappointment that Jesus would feel when He walked into the temple and saw that people had turned it into a den of thieves.”

Max says we can understand our circumstances, disappointments, and callings as part of a larger, ongoing story. In his book, , he says God shows us what He’s doing.

“What God is doing in each one of us is absolutely unique. He’s equipped each one of us with skills that will accomplish His story. There are still many Christians who believe that God saves us to make our lives better. The truth of the matter is that sometimes God saves us and our lives get worse! We think that the Church and Christianity exist to make our lives better. He doesn’t always heal; He doesn’t always fix. But He uses things to draw us closer to Him.”
