How prevalent is human trafficking, and how can the Church get involved to end it?

There are more slaves working today around the world – more than 32 million – than at the height of the slave trade in the 19th century.

On this edition of Live the Promise, Susie talks with wife, mother, and activist Jenny Almquist. Jenny founded the ministry Fierce Freedom and we discuss ways to get involved and set captives free, in Jesus’ Name. She describes her own journey from a housewife unaware to a woman who joined the fight to end human trafficking on the Midwest. In her words, it’s an industry that “chips away” at a person’s dignity.

What can the average person do to raise awareness and combat this horrific practice?

  • Tell others. Raise awareness through social media, face to face conversations or fliers.
  • Invest in change. Whether it’s finances, prayers, or time.
  • Consume wisely. Many products are produced by forced laborers; to find out if you’re buying clothes or household items that have been made by slaves, go to slaveryfootprint.org and walk through the quiz.
  • Be aware. Watch for things and people that seem out of place. High-profile events are opportunities for traffickers to increase their business – commit to pray over the Superbowl, the Olympics, and other national and international events.
  • Write. Contact your local legislators and push them to pass stricter laws that hold traffickers accountable and protect the women and children who have been victimized.
