God can use every one of us, regardless of our baggage.

Listen as Susie talks with Elisa Morgan. She shares her own journey, from leading MOPS to walking through brokenness in her own family. Elisa herself came from a divorced home with a mother who struggled with alcoholism, so she was determined to build a family that wasn’t “broken.”

Her hope was eventually dashed when her teenaged daughter became pregnant and her son experimented with drugs. As the leaders of Mothers of Pre-Schoolers, she felt deeply inadequate to lead with such a “broken” family. The Lord told her, “Let me use your deficits to become your offering.” God uses our pain as a platform for ministry – we may not want to walk through it, but God will use it to build up and convict others.

Elisa and her husband learned to lean on God and reject the notions of formula. Many parents hope that if they raise their children in the church, they won’t wander or make poor choices. Elisa and her husband are learning to give their children to God and let Him guide them through each season. As Elisa puts it, “We’re not responsible for their choices. We’re responsible for our response to their choices.”

Elisa also calls us to be real with each other. It’s easy to hide our mess, put on a smile, and tell yourself you don’t need any help. Let trusted friends see your failures and inadequacies, but be ready to share your story with those who cross your path. Elisa shares her own journey after she approached her coworkers at MOPS. “I needed them. They held my arms up, if you will, as I continued to lead.” Eventually she felt led to share her experiences in writing.

Elisa’s book is The Beauty of Broken: My Story and Likely Yours Too.
