How can we steward our work well? What does it mean to live for Christ in the business world? Listen as Susie talks with Austin Hill, of Austin Hill’s Big World of Small Business and the new voice of our morning show. They explore faith, righteousness, justice, and joy in the workplace.

Austin offers his thoughts on many topics, including

Entitlement:

“Along with the growing trend we see of a decline of participation in the labor force is consumption of the federal welfare programs at an all-time high. At some point we have to have this conversation and ask ourselves honestly, could it be the case that we dis-incentivize people from taking initiative, from wanting to provide for themselves and their families? It’s difficult territory to walk on but I think we need to have the conversation.”

Faith and work:

Susie says, “You might have a passionate walk of faith, but there’s something very spiritual about going to work every day and submitting to your boss and grinding it out, taking it in the chin when you’ve got to be corrected and redirected, and learning to be someone who’s a good employee.”

Austin agrees. “Our faith is not just simply evangelism and discipleship but also walking the walk. Getting up and going to work, slaying the dragons of life and making headway in the marketplace… there’s something profoundly spiritual about that.” Austin points to our birth as a nation to make his point. “Previous generations of our country understood that. One of the more fascinating things to do is study the lives of the American founders… we’re talking about young men in their 20’s and 30’s, the life expectancy was only 40 or 45; they were founding a country, for heaven’s sakes!” It’s important to speak of Christ but also to live and work for His Name’s sake, wherever God has placed us.

Austin’s weekend program, Austin’s Big World of Small Business:

“I wasn’t sure how listeners would respond to a business show; I think there are a lot of misperceptions about business and about capitalism and free markets that are very unbiblical and rampant within the Church, and I was prepared for a backlash, but what I’ve been humbled by is the response that I’ve seen. I think it’s a dialogue we need to have within the church, [and] I think the time is right. The Church has the solution and I think we need to talk about the solutions.”
