The genealogy in Matthew 1 isn’t something we have really read together as a family. It doesn’t really make for compelling reading.

But we took a look at it with our family and talked through some of the names we knew.

These names provided a legacy of Faith for Jesus. Many of the names in His ancestry had some amazing stories of God at work.

We took some time to think through our own legacy of faith. Both my wife and I come from strong families of faith.

Read through the geneaology with your kids, then start to share the stories of how God has worked through THEIR heritage. It may even be a good idea to get a grandparent  (or great-grandparent) on the phone for a story or two.

If you don’t come from a family with a strong faith heritage, you can take a look at some of the great stories of redemption that show up in the genealogy of Christ, and talk through the redemption that has happened in YOUR family. This is a great time to share YOUR story of faith with your children.

Questions for your time together:

  • Do any of these names in Matthew 1 sound familiar?
  • What are some of the stories you remember from these names?
  • What are some ways you can continue the story of faith in our family?
