One of the things we allow our girls to do as we read through the Bible, is to pull out the crayons and paper and draw something that they heard.

This allows them to keep their hands busy, while soaking in the reading.

One of my favorite drawings came from our Kindergartener. (And I really wish I had kept it).

It was a guy, wearing a crown, sitting on a toilet, in a cave, while someone was peeking in on him.

That night, we had read 1 Samuel 24

3 He came to the sheep pens along the way; a cave was there, and Saul went in to relieve himself. David and his men were far back in the cave. 4 The men said, “This is the day the LORD spoke of when he said[b] to you, ‘I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.’” Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.

All she could picture was a king, on a toilet, in a cave.

While, perhaps, the cultural context may be way off… she was listening.

What are some other ways we can engage kids?

As they get older… what else works?
