Jesus came to die for us and set us free from death, guilt, shame, and dead religion. On Feb. 2 of 2012, author Eric Metaxas stood before legislators, religious leaders, and journalists at the National Prayer Breakfast and courageously presented the gospel. His speech caused a stir both inside and outside the Christian community, and he joins Susie to unpack his book, based on his message,  .

Eric considered it a incredible privileged to simply be asked to speak.  He shares how he was invited to the National Prayer Breakfast and how it felt to be behind the scenes with well-known political figures that he doesn’t necessarily agree with. He also talks about how his plans of what he was going to speak on changed as he approached the day of the prayer breakfast and how it went from a discussion on his own testimony to his speech about phony religion and famous religious figures Dietrich Bonhoeffer and William Wilberforce.

Metaxas also touches on the popular idea that we, as humans, tend to believe we have to climb to heaven completely on our own and not trust God to help us on our way there. He also looks at what dead religion looks like and how to avoid it in everyday life, and about the joy of a changed life when you truly start to live in Christ. As well, he considers how we need to treat non-believers once we become believers ourselves, and that we cannot assume that when we become a Christian, we will stop having problems and struggles.

Eric also shares a story about having his photo taken with the president of the United States.
