The real issue behind unhealthy living usually lurks beneath the surface—in a woman’s heart and mind.

Author Michelle McKinney Hammond shares her story and tips for lasting change in her book,   .

Michelle and Susie differentiate between craving and hunger. We can talk ourselves into craving all sorts of things we don’t need or shouldn’t be eating. So, we need to look to things besides food to fill our cravings and focus on breaking bad habits.

The biggest battle is in our minds. We have to listen to what our bodies are telling us and instead of using food as a past-time or a stress-reliever. One way Michelle combated her mind’s desire for food was to read a Scripture whenever she felt hungry.

Next, she learned she had to love and respect her body. Loving ourselves and accepting who we are gives us the strength to control our weight.

So, how do we make peace with our bodies?

1. We need God to talk to us about our bodies. We are fearfully and wonderfully made, and God has a whole different view of beauty.

2. Stop the comparisons. There will always be someone prettier, skinnier or richer than you. We need to deal with were we our. We must resist the urge to beat ourselves up. For there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ.

3. Realize that beauty is found in relationships and living a purposeful existence.

4. Ask God to fill our hearts and minds with positive confessions. Begin to praise him for your heart and your body. Begin to praise him for the strength to take care of it and maintain it like the temple he would like it to be.
