How do you feel about yourself? How do you talk about yourself?

Is your judgement of yourself most often based on your performance at work, in the home, or in the classroom?

“Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:35-36

Many of us fall into the trap of basing our worth on what we can do versus what Jesus has already done. According to Susie Larson, it changes everything when we find our worth in Christ.

“If you are in Christ, He has offered you not only a secure eternity, but He took up residence in your spirit and your soul and we have been moved from being orphans to heirs. We now have a place at the table of grace.”

Because of Christ – not anything we can manufacture or strive for – our identities are forever found in Him.

“Once we become heirs of God we’re a part of this family forever. Why do you think we vacillate between the two mindsets? We sit at that orphan table, we beg and we plead, and when we perform well we more easily see ourselves at that table of grace as if we somehow earned that treasured status.”

The truth is that we can’t earn our way to the table of grace; it is a free gift. We also can’t lose our spot at the table of grace just by making a mistake.

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9

Living as chosen people changes how we live, how we engage our faith, and how we approach God.

“If we don’t understand who we are because of what Jesus has done. We will never fully apprehend the promises of God. We’ll never fully engage our faith. We’ll never fully come boldly into the presence of the Living God because we’re constantly unsure about our status, about how God feels about us, always wondering if He’s going to yank us from our place at the table of grace when we mess up or forget who we are. It starts and ends with His victory for us on the cross and if you can shift all of your weight, all of your perspective on the finished work of Jesus. It will change everything.”
