“We can’t serve God fully while we’re all settled in because God is the great Un-settler.”– An excerpt from Lisa Whittle‘s book,  .

What happens when we’re so comfortable our guard is lowered? Lisa calls us to examine how strong our sense of comfort is. There’s a connection between comfort and amnesia.

“When we’re in this season of ease, our tendency is to forget God.” We forget that we need Him. We forget that He wants our whole heart.

Spiritual strength comes from spiritual consistency.

 “When something happens in our life and it’s a big deal – we break open the Word, we’re praying. What would our life be like if we had that consistency? Where we were in the Word, even when we weren’t in crisis? What would that do for our lives?”

In Deuteronomy, God reminded Israel to stay connected to Him and remind themselves of His presence and promises. Lisa echoes His warning;

“When you go to that Promised Land, your tendency is going to be to forget.”

The first part of soul revival is to remember. When you remember God, your love for Him grows.

How do we balance loving God and loving His gifts? We’re worshippers by nature and too easily love blessings more than the One giving them. Sometimes we relegate God to a cosmic Santa Claus, whose only purpose is to give us material blessings without further interfering in our lives. Lisa says that’s only part of the story.

“What He’s already done on the cross is enough. And yet He is such a generous giver [in addition to that]. He gives us breath in our body. If we’re breathing today, that is a gift.”

What if we want to come to God with a request? We can want God and His gifts, as long as they’re held in proper perspective.

“It’s not that He doesn’t want us to ask. But I believe He wants us to ask from a heart that already in tune with Him, and that is the key.”
