The more we know about God, the more we come face to face with our own weaknesses. Sara Hagerty says it’s not about eliminating weaknesses, it’s about realizing who makes us strong in the first place.

“The degree to which I allow weakness to become thirst for more of God, and the degree to which I allow myself to lean into that thirst rather than run from it, is the degree to which I’m becoming my best self.”

We work against ourselves when we try to hide our weaknesses.

“We so often resist weakness. More covertly, we despise the places where we feel weak. We feel great when we’re on top of things, yet God’s Word tells us that His power is made perfect in our weakness.”

Sara uses the example of her biological son as someone who doesn’t resist weakness.

“For a period of time, all he would say is ‘up please, up please, up please.’ Those were his only words to us.”

For her biological son, vulnerability and acknowledging weakness was natural. However, it wasn’t the same for her adopted children.

“Vulnerability was so accessible to my biological son. Whereas our children we’ve adopted, they tend to resist vulnerability. They have made themselves to be strong in order to fend off the things they’ve faced in their lives.”

While the fear of vulnerability is understandable in her adopted children, Sara knows that’s not how God wants us to live.

“Looking at my son and seeing that vulnerable ‘up please,’ it’s such a picture of the stance God wants us to have before Him. Where all day we’re saying, ‘I need you, I need You, I need You.’ It goes against our human nature. My human nature wants to prove that I’m strong, but the invitation from God to admit we’re weak and ask Him for help.”

In what way is God calling you to acknowledge your weakness and lean on Him today?
