When our life falls apart, God meets us in the rubble.

One of the things singer-songwriter Nichole Nordeman learned through the process of writing her new album, was the importance of leaving a legacy.

We all want to leave a legacy here on earth. We all want to be remembered for something.  When Nichole went through her divorce she thought that the legacy she had built on earth ended with her marriage.

“So much for singing the song ‘legacy’ because now I can’t leave one, I’m damaged goods.”

However, through the painful experience of divorce, God showed her what it really means to leave a legacy.

“I do feel like part of the legacy I’ll leave will involve transparency and vulnerability. The definition of legacy has changed from this sort of grandiose idea of ‘things I’ve done for the kingdom’ to just putting a brick or two in the wall.”

As Christians, we don’t have to put pressure on ourselves to leave a legacy on a grand scale. We haven’t failed God if we never become a songwriter or famous preacher. God just wants us to leave the legacy that He has for us, no matter how small it might seem from the world’s perspective. Every legacy created by God is significant.

“I don’t mind if you’ve got something nice to say about me
And I enjoy an accolade like the rest
And you could take my picture and hang it in a gallery
Of all the who’s who’s and so-and-so’s
That used to be the best at such and such
It wouldn’t matter much

I want to leave a legacy, how will they remember me?
Did I choose to love? Did I point to You enough
To make a mark on things? I want to leave an offering
A child of mercy and grace who blessed Your name
Unapologetically and leave that kind of legacy.”
