The Liberty Bell first rang out on July 8th, celebrating the July 4th Declaration of Independence.

That sound comes from the Liberty Bell. This was not just an ordinary bell, it carried a significance message from the Word of God. Professor and author Peter Lillback points to the biblical reference that is engraved on the Liberty Bell from Leviticus 25:10.

“At the top of it there is a verse that says, ‘Proclaim liberty throughout the land unto all the inhabitants thereof.’”

Despite the large crack on its side, the Liberty Bell has maintained the beautiful sound of freedom throughout the years.

“After it was cracked it was almost thrown away. Another group of people remembered it and they brought it back out to symbolize their emphasis on liberty, we know them today as the abolitionists.”

The abolitionists played an important role in naming and saving the Liberty Bell and keeping the message of freedom strong in America.

“They remembered that on that old broken bell, it said, ‘proclaim liberty throughout the land to all the inhabitants thereof,’ and they said, ‘We need to end slavery in America.’ They actually gave to the Pennsylvania state house bell, that have been cracked, the popular name we know it by today as the Liberty Bell.”

Professor Lillback reminds us that the Liberty Bell represents four Biblical principles of liberty.

1. Biblical jubilee year.

2. Religious liberty.

3. National liberty.

4. Civil liberties.
