Are you happy with your eating habits? Or do you have that nagging feeling in the back of your head telling you it’s time to be more healthy. Lisa Morrone explains the appeal of junk food and the importance of eating healthy.

“As sin-driven humans, we tend to look at things that give us immediate pleasure.”

One thing that we often look to for immediate pleasure is food. Our culture is full of processed junk food that seems appealing, but can be detrimental to our health. It gives us immediate satisfaction but doesn’t last. God provided food for more than just cheap, immediate satisfaction.

“God created food in a way that is supposed to be satisfying and pleasurable and nutritious and full of fiber and all those wonderful things.”

What God created good, we adapt and cheapen to fit our misguided, sinful desires.

“What we do is we’ll go in and we’ll take out the bran around grain because it’s much sweeter to eat grains that don’t have bran. We will take fruit and make juice because who wants to peel a whole orange when we can drink down juice, but that juice without the fiber of the orange is going to spike our blood sugar.”

Lisa sees many similarities between how humans twist the good gift of food with how we pervert the gift of sex.

“God has created boundaries for us to enjoy and be satisfied, but when we take away those boundaries, we end up with immediate pleasure and long-term harm.”

We are so used to ingesting processed food that healthy food isn’t even appealing. It can take months and even years to reset our taste buds and brain to enjoy healthy food.

“We actually retrain our palate for things that are good for us, but it takes a little bit of time.”

Why does it matter?

Motivation is also an important factor to consider when developing good eating habits. We should eat to fuel ourselves to do the Lord’s work not selfishly for comfort or to cure boredom.

“…Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own…” – Corinthians 6:19

God will hold us accountable based on how we treat our bodies. They are not our own, they belong to Him. Taking care of our bodies and maintaining a healthy diet is a spiritual, and physical, act of worship.
