Highlight: importance of honor

God calls us to honor and esteem others above ourselves, Kevin Gerald explains why honor is an essential out pouring of the Christian life.

“Honor is an attribute of God. It’s God’s nature. I believe that when we honor the people in our lives, we create a place for God to actually bless our own lives.”

What does it look like to honor another person?

“Honor is something that’s above and beyond a smile. I like to say to people, let’s honor up, let’s honor down, and let’s honor all around. We’re not talking about honoring a person because you have to, but let’s honor God’s creation in the people around us.”

The concept of honoring another carries many misconceptions. Honor does not have to be a complicated or formal gesture.

“I’m not talking about some sort of stoic form of honor ceremony, I am talking about the everyday generous investiture forms of honor. And even when we do that it really creates a places and space in our life to be honored by God in new levels.”

God calls us to honor others regardless of whether or not we feel it is deserved.

“Honor is not something people have to earn. People earn respect, but let’s not make them earn honor.”

When we honor those around us and expect His favor to rest on us, we might be surprised by the powerful impact these two practices can have on our lives. In order to see God’s favor in our lives, we have to expect it and be willing to look for it. Otherwise, His favor will be all around us, but we won’t even recognize it.
