“Sleep is the most under-rated area of our healthcare system as far as just being addressed properly.”

Sleeplessness can be caused by the food we consume, our nighttime routines, or a number of other factors. Sleep issues occur when our airway is compromised, which prevents us from entering deep REM sleep.

Synapse Center’s Dr. Troy Spurrill references a sleep disorder called upper airway resistance syndrome, which sets up a level of adrenal fatigue and exhaustion. There’s often a connection between this particular sleep disorder and fibromyalgia.

“The reality is it won’t improve until you actually get the airway re-stabilized. The muscles and the nerves that fire to those muscles have to be firing properly.”

Dr. Troy recommends dental splints and chiropractic adjustments to help bring relief and allow you to sleep more soundly. Any steps to stabilize the head can improve your sleeping habits. When we’re battling sleeplessness, we don’t allow our body time to repair itself.

“People get into a fight-or-flight state and they can’t get back into a rest-and-digest state.”

Insomnia can also be connected to poor digestive functions. Dr. Troy urges us to consider all factors and if necessary, make an appointment with a doctor.

“We usually see with, the sleep problems, the digestive stuff is there. Sometimes it’s silent, but when we actually look at it, and do some digging into it, we see that there’s quite a lot of problems there too, which just feed this scenario.”

As discouraging and wearying as insomnia can be, there is hope when it comes to treating sleep issues.
