Highlight: Discovering our worth

What sets God apart from his creation? What makes Him unique? According to Jen Wilkin, one of the often overlooked attributes of God is His self-existence.

“This is one of the under-discussed attributes of God. It’s the one we acknowledge when we talk about God as creator, as the origin of all things.”

While this attribute is often unnoticed, it is also important.

“It relates directly to our value of human beings. If you and I went to an art museum and we were looking at various pieces of art and I told you that one piece of art was worth a million dollars and another was worth five thousand dollars, you would say, well what’s the difference? This one doesn’t look significantly better than the other one.”

But, if I told you that the million dollar one was painted by Picasso, it would make sense.”

Picasso is a well-known painter and because he created the painting, it had more value.

“The person who creates something is what gives value to the creation. When we’re able to acknowledge that God is self-existent, that no one creates him, but that he creates and sustains all things, then we begin to topple the myth that we are self-created.”

Often times, we fall into the trap of finding our worth in what we have created.

“For our children, we often say, I created you therefore I should be in charge of your destiny. But when we can acknowledge that only God creates, that He is the origin of all things, then my value and the value of the person who I marry is not rooted in their behavior towards me, it’s rooted in their origins, it’s rooted in the fact that they’re an image of the Living God.”
